Kim Bernard: Encaustic Paintings

Artist Reception and Wine Tasting July 8th, 4 - 7 pm

Wasibi

   Kim Bernard,"Wabi-Sabi", 2005, Encaustic, 14 x 6 inches

Kim Bernard has been known for her Raku fired pottery, and was a Raku instructor at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in 2004. She has a great talent for mixing media and techniques, and her work has evolved to incorporate encaustics, lead, paint and other materials. "Often by implementing contrasting materials like encaustic and lead," explains Bernard, "I am intrigued by the rapport - whether the materials contrast, harmonize, oppose or compliment each other. Dividing the surface into compartments enables a dialogue between the elements." The artist has traveled in Japan and Europe, and her images reveal the influence of Japanese aesthetics and culture. She insists that the work reveals itself in "the present" and approaches each piece without preconceived ideas.

Meet the artist at THE CLOWN in Downtown Stonington on Friday, July 8th. THE CLOWN is open Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm.

Deborah Randall Oil Paintings: Dangerous Circus and Other Childhood Memories

Artist Reception and Wine Tasting August 12th, 4 - 7 pm

Untitled
Deborah Randall, "Corn Happy", 2005, Oil on Board, 24x24 inches

How does Deborah Randall reconcile her past with the present day work of painting? Her own childhood environment and memories influence each painting. Deborah Randall writes, "My imagery ranges from abstract to more literal depiction inspired by personal narratives through memories of childhood and everyday experiences. I am curious about the relationships we have as children and how they inofrm our behavior as adults. Specifically I have been examining issues of power and control and how they are acted out in play." Deborah Randall brings a wry sense of mystery and humor to her abstract pieces that combine bits and pieces of figures, things and iconic symbols. She faces her work with a process that responds to what takes place while she paint. The paintings evolve into wonderfully explosive and exciting images that provoke and intrigue the viewer.

Join us in welcoming the artist, Deborah Randall, Friday August 12th from 4 - 7 pm.
